Ascension by El Greco

Ascension by El Greco

On the fortieth day after the Resurrection, the apostles gathered in the same house, and Christ appeared again before them. Talking with the disciples, he went to the Mount of Olives. There, after blessing the apostles, he raised his hands and began to ascend to heaven, rising higher and higher above the earth, to the very clouds… In astonishment and deep sadness the apostles froze, unable to tear their eyes from the sky. After bowing to the Master, they returned to Jerusalem.

An interesting solution for the transfer of this story is the artist El Greco in the film “Ascension.” All artistic means are subordinated to the embodiment of absolute tranquility, grandeur and beauty of the image of the ascended Christ. It is impossible to forget his face, full of love and mercy to people.

The dazzling light emanating from the Savior terrifies the apostles and guards shown at the bottom of the picture. The nervous rhythm of the lines, the contrast of pink, blue, gray and red spots, among which the white banner in the hands of Christ stands out sharply, is all designed to strengthen the drama and solemnity of what is happening.
