Saint Matthew, the original name of Levi, one of the twelve apostles and author of the first Gospel. Known under his name “Matthew’s Gospel” is one of the oldest and least contested by criticism.
He was called to the apostles from the position of a tax collector, that is, a fee collector. According to Eusebius of Caesarea, for 15 years after the ascension of Jesus Christ, he preached to the Jews in Jerusalem, and then went with a sermon to other nations – to the Ethiopians, Macedonians, Persians. The memory of the Apostle Matthew in the Orthodox Church is honored on June 30 and November 16, in the Catholic Church – on September 21.
