El Greco decorated altars in a number of churches. One of them, in the church of Santo Domingo el Antiguo in Toledo, he decorated with sculptures; in other cases El Greco designed the frame of the altar itself.
The artist was very interested in architecture and even wrote a treatise on this subject. Unfortunately, both these treatises disappeared without a trace.
