A rainy day in Boston by Child Hassam

To Boston, the artist Child Hassam was experiencing a separate weakness – it was here that his career began, it was this city that saw his first exhibition. Boston was sung in many works of the master. The picture presented refers to the early period of creativity. The canvas represents a wide city square, from which two long streets leave.

Hassan believed that the architecture of American cities is worthy of depiction. In response, the critics only gently bragged about finding such works pretty nice, but the city landscape, in their opinion, “did not reach” to high art. Meanwhile, a little time will pass and Hassan will be declared a true American “chronicler” who has preserved for the descendants accurate but at the same time poetic reproduction of the streets of the city. Here and “Rainy Day in Boston” pleases the audience with beautiful ladies, hiding under umbrellas, phaetons and, of course, an unparalleled rain-shining pavement.

City paintings of the master are very “smoothed” and secular. The artist avoided depicting gray areas and troubled neighborhoods. He was attracted by everyday life, a stream of people, horse-drawn carriages, houses and growing skyscrapers. He seemed to want to have time to capture the inevitably disappearing era. This work clearly traces the style of the master, “American zest” – the use of brown and dark colors in the canvas, which sound in consonance with the rest of the palette. From impressionism there is still a little, bright bold strokes, bold interpretation of color will come later.
