Triumphant procession by William Hogarth

Triumphant procession by William Hogarth

This is the final scene from the Hogartha series “Elections”, representing a sharp satire on British politicians in general, although the pictures of the series described a very specific event – the 1754 parliamentary elections. The series begins with the canvas “The Pre-election Banquet,” which features a magnificent banquet arranged by candidates seeking to secure the votes of the electorate.

The next canvas is “Bribery of voices”, which continues the theme of bribes. It is followed by the “Voting”, which tells about the fraudulent results in the elections. And finally – “Triumphal procession” with the representation of the chosen one. The picture is full of allusions to the elections held in Oxford, here the candidate from the party of Tori did not manage to sit in the desired chair. The loser candidate from the Vigov party protested, the Parliament, in which the majority belonged to the liberals, accepted this protest, canceled the election results and awarded the candidate to the Vigov.

In the picture of Hogarth there is also a candidate who will become a real winner – we can see his shadow on the wall of the house in the background.
