The wedding of Friedrich Barbarossa and Beatrice of Burgundy by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

In 1750, Tiepolo received an invitation to decorate with frescoes the throne room of the residence of the ruler of Franconia, Archbishop Greyfenklau. To paint the residence of the artist helped his sons – twenty-four-year-old Domenico and fourteen-year-old Lorenzo.

The decorative program of the throne room includes the central fresco of the ceiling, which depicts the allegorical figure “Genius of the Empire” to which Apollo brings the Burgundian bride, and two historical scenes on both sides of the room, glorifying the emperor Friedrich Barbarossa, one of which is “The Wedding of Emperor Friedrich Barbarossa and Beatrice of Burgundy “.
