Alekseev is a Russian landscape painter, the most famous Russian master of the urban landscape, in fact the first among Russian painters. Prior to this, the artists sang of nature more. its beauty and completeness – Alekseev also captures cities as places that are able to tell about people much more than they know themselves, even more than some portraits. He started with the fact that he wrote the scenery. But over time, he became famous, and even wrote at the request of the emperor.
“Trinity-Sergius Lavra” is his work, written for the soul, in his usual attentive, cautious and quivering manner. He seemed to have removed the reality from reality and attached it to the picture – he captured one place and on his canvas, it remained unchanged for many years. The Trinity-Sergius Lavra is a monastery, the largest in Russia, not subordinate to the local diocese, but under the personal supervision of the patriarch. In many years, took a lively part in the life of the country – for example, the monks of the monastery confronted the supporters of False Dmitry in the Time of Troubles.
In the same picture. however, there are no traces of those years. On the contrary, it seems very bright – high domes, crowned with crosses, white walls, traditional ecclesiastical architecture, a small avenue to which the trampled paths flock. The sky is as high as the ceiling of the temple. The golden light of the sun pours a laurel and fills it with a premonition of good. In this light, the grass in the picture is similar to water – it seems, if a monk walked along the path, stumbling, he would soak his feet.
At a sight at a picture it is felt, that the place represented on it was for the artist sacred. He wrote it out in bright colors, carefully, as if he were afraid of not being able to transfer some spirit to paper, to deprive the place of light, leaving it empty and dead. But this fear was not justified. Light remained in the picture, and will be with her forever.
