In the eastern wall of the chapel there is an arched hole leading to the altar, the walls of which are also painted, but Giotto has nothing to do with this painting. Above the arch from the outside of the altar is another fresco by Giotto, depicting the Lord, who sends Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary with the message of the imminent birth of Jesus Christ.
A little lower, on one side of the arch, the archangel Gabriel informs this news of Mary, and on the other side – Mary listens to the heavenly messenger. Still lower – two scenes, telling about the life of the Virgin Mary and Jesus.
Finally, at the very bottom of the wall, closer to the floor, two rooms with vaulted ceilings are depicted. A simple wooden ceiling of the chapel is painted in a symbolizing Heaven blue color. Against this backdrop, Giotto painted ten medallions depicting the Virgin Mary, Jesus and the Old Testament prophets. The Chapel del Arena passed many times from hand to hand. In 1820 the house was completely destroyed. The preserved church in 1880 acquired the municipality of Padua in the city property.
Opening of the chapel for public visits coincided with a surge of interest in the work of Giotto, which marked the end of the XIX century. Destiny kept these treasures during the Second World War. On Padua bombs were repeatedly bombarded, but none of them fell into the chapel. It is felt in this fact mystical breath.
