Ribera developed some themes in many works with various emotional and pictorial nuances.
One of them – the theme of suffering and martyrdom, associated primarily with the images of the saints. Saint Philip was tortured for preaching Christianity. Ribera depicted how the executioners whip him up the ridge to tear off the skin.
With tremendous authenticity, the tortured body of the saint, muscular arms and huge torsos of the executioners are written. On the face of the martyr, beautiful in his prayerful suffering, read the tremendous strength of faith and readiness for sacrifice.
