The magnificent Hour of the Duke of Berry. June. Hayfield by Brothers Limburg

The place is Paris, a meadow on the island of Giuif, next to the Cite, you can see the castle of Conciergerie, Saint-Chapelle. The most illustrious images of the Horology are the cycle “The Seasons” of 12 miniatures depicting months. Hours of work often contained a calendar, but the illustrations of the series “The Seasons” in this manuscript turned out to be innovative in terms of their focus, themes, chosen themes for image, composition, as well as artistic and technical performance.

Most of these illustrations depict some of the castles of the Duke of Berry in the background, and the first depicts a lot of details, attributes and usual activities for this time of year, ranging from the Duke’s ceremonial dinner and ending with trained pigs looking for acorns.

Each illustration is crowned with the corresponding heavenly hemisphere, which shows the solar chariot, the signs of the zodiac and its degrees, as well as the number of days in the month and the lettering of the Julian lunar calendar.
