The painting “The Death of St. Sebastian” was painted by painter Joachim Eytewal on the basis of genuine Christian history. The size of the picture is 170 x 125 cm, canvas, oil. Sebastian, a saint, a Christian martyr. It is mentioned in the Roman chronograph of 354 and in Jerome’s martyrology.

According to the Christian tradition, he was born in Gaul, served as the commander of the Praetorians in Rome under Emperor Diocletian. When it was revealed that Sebastian was a Christian and converted many soldiers, he was sentenced to death and shot by archers. A pious widow, Irina saved a dying martyr, but on the orders of Diocletian he was stabbed to death. His body was buried near the catacombs by another pious Christian woman, whom the saint appeared in a vision.

The martyrdom of St. Sebastian is a frequent plot in the painting of the 15th and 17th centuries. Usually depicted in the image of a beautiful young man pierced by arrows.
