
Religious subjects occupy a prominent place in Goya’s work, but these works are less well-known, as critics most often emphasize the artist’s innovation and only superficially touch on the connections of his painting with religion.
The nature of these connections can be clearly seen in the picture “Crucifixion”, which many critics perceive as a kind of roll call with the great Spanish artists of the XVII century – Velazquez and Surbaran.
Other religious paintings were made by Goya in a much less orthodox manner. The most interesting in this respect are his frescoes for the church of San Antonio de la Florida in Madrid, created in 1798.
