Engraving “Stigmatization of the righteous” is an illustration to the 7th chapter of the book “Revelation” of John the Theologian.
Four angels appear on the four corners of the earth. They keep four earth winds so that they do not blow to the ground. A breather! Darkness and despair give way to light and hope.
Four mighty winged angels reliably protect the world from all four sides. Their figures are majestic and calm. Everyone is armed with a sword. Another angel is marking the righteous, saved from death. Therefore this engraving is called “Stigmatization of the Righteous.” The angel so carefully and so habitually holds a thin brush, that it seems, Durer has drawn it from one of his students, who was first allowed to touch the painting with a brush.
