In June 1762, Tiepolo arrived in Madrid at the invitation of the Spanish king to decorate the throne room of the royal palace. The composition “Glory of Spain”, a preliminary sketch of which was made by the artist in Venice, was intended to glorify the Spanish nation, which in the 16th-17th centuries. has become one of the leading European powers.
Despite the complex structure of numerous figurative elements and their intricate meaning, and also due to the large open space of the firmament, this work of Tiepolo was the brightest of all his works. Work on the plafone of the throne room was completed in 1764. The king, quite pleased with the artist’s creation, instructs him to paint several other rooms of the palace.
