Degas is known for works depicting dancers, in particular ballet dancers. While most of them focus on rehearsals and preparing for the performance, this work shows a lone ballerina on stage.
Behind her is a dark figure, probably a patron. At the moment, the dancer bathes in the glory of her performance. It was at this time that Degas started masterfully capturing the movement.
