Ruins of the theater in Taormina (Sicily) by Ashil Etna Mishalon

Mishalon, despite his early death, made a significant contribution to the development of plein-air painting. In 1817, for one of the landscapes, the artist received a special prize with a Roman scholarship and from 1818 to 1821 he worked in Italy.

Following C. Bern, he studied the effects of natural writing, but his painting did not have the thoroughness that was inherent in the works of the 18th century. Mishalon wrote freely, easily, trying to capture all the shades of colors, to convey the mood that nature itself created.

The artist, of course, did not have time to fully realize his talent; nevertheless, he entered the history of art not only as one of the remarkable landscape painters, but also as one of the teachers of K. Corot, who came to Mishalon as an apprentice in 1821. Other famous works : “View of the Colosseum in Rome.” Louvre, Paris; “View of Naples from the height of Vesuvius.” The Louvre, Paris.
