Roshan Wajifdar by Svyatoslav Roerich

Svetoslav Roerich spent most of his life in ancient beautiful India, where the Roerich family first arrived in 1923. “Most of my paintings, as you know, are dedicated to India, because I live in India, because I wanted to reflect the life of India, a life that especially attracted me and that might have amazed me.”

Portraits were the first pictorial passion of Svetoslav Nikolaevich: “… I started as a portrait painter. I loved people. They always attracted me. And it so happened that in my art I brought a person to the fore.”

Portraiture speaks of Roerich’s great original talent. “When I paint a portrait, I’m mostly interested in a person’s character, and I try to paint portraits of people I know. Sometimes it’s quite simple to read a person’s character, but it’s still better to know and study,” the artist said.

In his portraits, the magnificent technique of drawing is especially clearly seen; the faces are carefully written out in a subtle color-tonal manner, and the bright background colors impart to the portraits exceptional decorativeness and multiplicity, complement the characteristics of the person, allow him to penetrate into the world of his hobbies and habits. The image, which has repeatedly inspired the artist, was the famous Indian dancer Roshan Vajifdar. Contemporaries who knew her, noted that Roshan is as beautiful in her soul as her beauty is perfect.
