Portrait of the boy Chelishchev by Orest of Kiprensky

One of the best works of Kiprensky. The artist painted a portrait of a twelve-year-old boy, who is preparing to enter the Corps of Pages. Chelishchev has a great future ahead of him. In 1812, the young man will become a participant in the Patriotic War, later – will be in the Northern Society of the Decembrists. But this is in the future.

Now we see a boy with everything ahead of him, who is just about to grow up. The boy is openly looking at the world. His big dark eyes radiate kindness, childish spontaneity and naivety. Plump lips, it seems, now spread into a smile. Round face, slightly disheveled hair. And it seems that the boy now tired of pose, he will break and run away. But the time of childhood is already passing.

If we look closely, we can see that in the eyes no longer children’s dreams are reflected. And the boy is not as naive as it may seem at first sight, his mind reads and strong will is read in his image. The image is completed by a combination of colors chosen by the artist: a dark jacket, a barely noticeable collar of a white shirt, a scarlet vest – they give a portrait of Chelishchev a note of mystery.
