Vladimir Sergeevich Soloviev – the son of the famous historian Sergei Solovyov – a humanist, poet and philosopher, openly opposed the use of the death penalty for the murderers of Alexander II and a great friend of Ivan Kramskoy, who in 1881 wrote his magnificent portrait.
The artist portrayed the Thinker sitting in a carved chair. A clever face, to which thick black hair falls, an aristocratic nose, deep eyes. The work is dominated by a dark ultramarine color, reminiscent of some works by Vrubel.
The uniqueness of Kramskoy’s portrait works consists in seeing the internal state of models.
