Portrait of Sir Henry Guildford by Hans Holbein

Portrait of Sir Henry Guildford by Hans Holbein

Sir Henry Guildford is two years older than King Henry VIII and was his favorite. He did at court a brilliant career in court as a controller of the royal court. Awarded the Order of the Garter in 1526. He was not a staunch supporter of the king’s religious reform.

The worldly power of its cumbersome figure, which is located on a background of blue-marsh color. The modeling of the face, the chiaroscuro, convey an unyielding character, a strong will-power nature.

This is enhanced by the fragile lighting in the upper left corner of the picture, where the tender vine and its antennae tremble. Against this background, the strength and unyielding will of Sir Henry Guildford stands out in contrast.
