This portrait of the elected head of the city of Antwerp, Rutger Le Uither, is a pair portrait of another painting by the Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens depicting his wife, the noble Antwerp lady Katarina Behagel.
In his portraits, Jordaens did not set out to create deep psychological images. Some of them are close to his paintings, others are more ceremonial and similar in manner to the portraits of the artist’s family, the married couple Surpelen.
