Portrait of Mademoiselle Helen Roar by Edgar Degas

Portrait of Mademoiselle Helen Roar by Edgar Degas

After the 1870s, Degas painted only a few portraits, almost completely moving to pastel.

However, this did not prevent him in 1886 to paint with oil a large portrait of Mademoiselle Helen Roar, daughter of her friend Henri Ruar, an artist, collector and entrepreneur.

Helen is depicted on the background of some of the treasures from his father’s collection.
