“Portrait of FI Shalyapin in the role of Holofernes” is among the best works of the artist and stage designer A. Ya. Golovin. It reproduced the mise en scene from the opera “Judith” by AN Serov.

Chaliapin-Holofernes is sitting on a luxurious bed in a magnificently tented tent, holding a cup in his right hand, and pointing forward with his left arrogant gesture. The composition of the canvas is built according to the laws of easel painting, and the model perspective and arbitrary illumination of objects inform the work of the nature of the fresco painting.

Shalyapin’s figure as an Assyrian commander almost merges with the background, which makes it look like a kind of decorative pattern. The canvas is permeated with a wavy movement, which is the main plastic motive, expressing the character of the musical solution of the image of the oriental commander.

The coloristic sound of the work is extremely rich. In this theatrical portrait, Golovin, richly with the bright color of the costume and the headdress of the artist, seems to emphasize the beauty of the voice of the great Russian singer.
