Portrait of Darya Nikolaevna Khvostova is distinguished by calm and tranquility. Before the viewer, the wife, the mother of the family, is a sweet and charming woman. Details of the costume and furnishings – the yellow Persian shawl, the air muslin collar of the dress, the gilded back of the chair, fashionable in those years – are written out surprisingly thinly.
But the most attractive are the kind, sympathetic, slightly sad face of the heroine and the look of her warm, velvety eyes. Kiprensky brings to the world the canons of moral purity, as if making us appreciate ourselves by inviting them into a world where there is no lie, where harmony and peace reign.
