Portrait of a schoolboy by Martin van Heemskerk

The Dutch painter Martin van Heemskerk studied in Haarlem and Delft, but the decisive role in his creative development was played by J. van Skorel, whose workshop in Utrecht he entered as an apprentice. Hemskerk strove to imitate the famous teacher in everything and, according to contemporaries, sometimes his manner could not be distinguished from the manner of Skorel. Following the teacher, Hemskerk visited Italy, where he performed many sketches of antique monuments.

A huge influence on him was the work of Michelangelo, which is especially noticeable in multi-figure altar images, paintings on antique subjects, which use complex foreshortenings. “Portrait of a schoolboy” was created in the early period of the artist’s work, when he followed the example of his teacher Skorel. It is not accidental that this work was even attributed to Scorel at one time. “Portrait of a schoolboy” – one of the best works of the artist.

A neat young man captured in the moment when he accidentally distracted from their studies – the study of Latin and intricacies of his work philosophy that is a sign of the times, testifying to the era of the classical humanistic education. Other famous works are “Golgotha”. The Hermitage, St. Petersburg; “St. Luke, drawing the Madonna.” 1532. F. Huls Museum, Haarlem; “Family portrait”. 1530. Picture gallery, Kassel.
