Pier in Gurzuv by Konstantin Korovin

Pier in Gurzuv by Konstantin Korovin

Creativity dedicated to the Crimea – a separate page in the work of Konstantin Korovin. The artist purchased a site on the shore of Gurzuf Bay, where he built a two-storey villa according to his own project in the style of constructivism.

One of the most striking works devoted to the magnificent picturesque region on the Black Sea is the painting “The Pier in Gurzuf.” The painter was looking for comfort and tranquility in her – just recently an accident happened with his youngest son, having got under the tram, he lost his legs. Korovin was very worried about the family tragedy and retired in 1914 to his estate, immersed in creativity, where he drew positive emotions.

How much the master wanted to protect his creativity from minor notes and sorrow, as he tried not to admit the darkness that reigned in his soul on the canvas! Only this explains the bright palette of the canvas, permeated with light and optimism. It is a life-affirming song to the hot southern nature, so solemn and multicolored.

On the open pier there is a girl in a hat with wide margins. The cafe is flooded with sunlight, which generously plays in small splashes of the Black Sea waves, which, contrary to the name, shimmers with all the shades of turquoise paint.

From the technical point of view, the picture is also noteworthy – Korovin has chosen here wide local color spots, rough strokes, quite contrasting in color, to speak of some decorativeness. Many art critics like to compare the picture with some kind of magic decoration.

As for style, this work of Korovin refers us to similar paintings by Monet and Renoir. The game of color and light is designed to depict the beauty and exclusivity of the moment. The beauty around us – Korovin insists the viewer. Here it is in the overflow of water, an important sailing ship with snow-white sails, flowering trees, scattered multicolored houses, densely settled on the slopes of the mountainous terrain of Gurzuf, in the summer air of the Crimean air, which so clearly flows to us from the canvas.

The artist was very fond of Gurzuf with his picturesque landscape, drowning in greenery, and the painting “Pier in Gurzuf” is another confirmation of this.
