Van Gogh showed in several drawings and paintings, women engrossed in work in the loneliness of their homes. Sewing, spilling threads, peeling potatoes, cleaning beans and cooking were among the most frequently depicted scenes and subjects.
Throughout the day, the light shone into the dark rooms through the windows, while the lamp-or the light from the fireplace illuminated the models in the evening. The interiors of Nuenen Van Gogh and the peasant women in their work convey a certain lack of sense of time and reflect the influence of Dutch genre painting of the 17th century.
