The appearance in 1960 of this painting by Pavel Nikonov caused a scandal in the highest artistic circles. They said that it should not be exhibited, since the Soviet people cannot be so harsh: they have such rude, weathered and ugly faces.
The picture was scolded by everyone who should be, and at the same time everyone who felt like it. However, Lyubov Plakhotnaya, director of the Kazakh Museum of Art, immediately bought it. Ten years later, according to the museum staff, Moscow very persistently requested that the painting be returned.
