The picture is not like the usual idealized images of the “Madonna with the Child”. A sleepy child holding a grenade, an exhausted and alarmed mother is the life observation of Botticelli, who himself had a family and knew all the troubles and troubles of home life. Even the angels in the background look like boys-choristers after a long and tiring rehearsal.
The composition of the picture reminds of the Siena school of painting, where the main figure was assigned the main place, while others were built from behind as a background, without the intention to create a common atmosphere for the whole scene.
