Madonna Geller by Albrecht Durer

Madonna Geller by Albrecht Durer

“Madonna and Child” – one of the outstanding works of the famous master. In it, Albrecht Durer achieved perfect color harmony. On a red background a window and a landscape. Madonna is pensive, immersed in sadness. The baby holds a fruit in his hands – a symbol of original sin, the red cushion frame symbolizes the blood of Jesus’ Passion.

“Madonna and Child” is also called “Madonna Geller”. Jacob Geller, a merchant from Frankfurt, ordered Durer the altar over which the artist worked for a long time, but various circumstances prevented him from completing his work on time. The merchant was impatient and always hurried the artist. Then Durer suggested that he buy the painting “Madonna and Child” instead of the altar, but Geller refused. The altar was completed in 1509 and, to the greatest regret, was burnt out in 100 years during the fire.
