Painting by the French painter Nicolas Lancre “Lady and gentleman with two girls in the garden.” The size of the painting is 89 x 98 cm, oil on canvas. Elegantly dressed characters drinking chocolate from porcelain cups in a landscape park are a typical French scene from the Rococo period.
Although this exquisite composition is conventionally different, it also represents an intimate family scene. The younger daughter threw off her doll, preferring to her the taste of hot chocolate, which her mother gently draws while her father watches them with love.
The composition of Lancre is distinguished by originality, since the figures of the characters are not located in the center, but shifted to the left. Lancre was a master of such pastoral paintings from the life of the aristocracy, forever after the French Revolution.
Having failed as a historical painter, Lancre succeeded in portraying gallant festivities in which figures are represented in pastoral costumes and decorations. Nicola Lancre was famous for depicting genre scenes, fairs, balls, and village weddings that are close in style to his contemporary Antoine Watteau.
