Self Portrait by Nicola Lancre

Self-portrait of the French painter Rococo Lancre Nicola. Portrait size 74 x 58 cm, oil on canvas. The French artist Nicola Lancre was born on January 22, 1690 in Paris to the family of a coachman. According to the will of his father, Lancre was originally intended to become an engraver.

He received his first lessons in drawing and engraving with his elder brother, Joseph Lancre. Since childhood, Nicola Lancre has shown a rare talent in depicting people and nature. And soon, by the decision of his parents, Nicola Lancre left the mastering of the engraver’s profession in order to devote all his time to the study of the art of painting. Lancré was first trained in the workshop of Pierre Dulen, a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, then worked in the workshop of the artist Claude Gillot, whose student at one time was also Antoine Watteau.

Watteau contacted Lancre and recommended that the young artist leave the studio of Gillot, paint landscapes of views of the environs of Paris, and hone compositional skill in depicting figures in the lap of nature. Lankre followed this advice of the Watteau painter, already quite famous in the artistic circles of Paris. Two works, which Lancre soon completed, were tested by Antoine Watteau, and were presented to the Academy of Arts. The pictures were accepted favorably and Lancre became a full member of the Academy on March 24, 1719.
