La Gulya, part of the Moulin Rouge with two women by Henri de Toulouse Lautrec

La Gulya was one of the most famous dancers in the “Moulin Rouge” and was famous for her looseness, frankness of dances and dresses. She received her stage name for striving to empty all the glasses left in the bar after the visitors. Translated from French, her name means “glutton”.

In life, La Gulya was rude and vulgar, but on the stage miraculously transformed into a brilliant actress. Toulouse-Lautrec endlessly admired her round face, eagle nose, blue cold eyes and a proud walk.

On the canvas, the artist painted a dancer in a silver-white dress with an astonishing cut to the middle of the stomach. Her golden-red hair is gathered in a bun, on her neck there is a black velvet with a bow and a thin gold chain. To the breast of La Gulya is pinned a buttonhole – so the artist draws the attention of the viewer to the already frank neckline.

The girl in the green dress, pictured on the right side of the picture, is undoubtedly much more beautiful than the drunk LaGoulet, who has gnawed her eyes. However, the championship still remains for the red-headed star “Moulin Rouge”.
