Icons of St. John the Divine in the life are a rarity. Even more rare are the iconic icons of this saint, in the centerpiece of which he is depicted “in silence” – with fingers touching closed lips and with an inspiring Sofia angel.
The icon is a work of icon painters Ivan Ivanov Bogdanov and Ivan Alekseev Bogdanov, peasant icon painters from the village of Karbatovo Chekuevskaya volost of Onega county. Ivan Ivanov Bogdanov was a leading master among the icon painters of the 18th century who worked in Kargopol. He headed the artel, which created iconostases and painted the “skies” of wooden churches.
Artel was the best in Kargopol and Pononezh and performed all the major art works in this region. Ivan Alekseev Bogdanov was a pupil of Ivan Ivanov and a master of this artel. Works are known, signed by them together. The presence of a signature with their names and exact date, with high quality of performance and good preservation of the icon, makes it an outstanding monument of the iconography of the Russian North in the second half of the 18th century.
The icon is a very significant art, historical and museum value.
