“Death of Actaeon” illustrates one of the stories taken from Ovid’s “Metamorphosis.” The beautiful Actaeon, hunting in the woods, accidentally saw the bathing goddess Diana. An angry goddess turned a young man into a deer and persecuted the unfortunate man with his own dogs.
In the picture we see running Diana, in one hand she holds a bow, with the second hand removes an arrow from the quiver. Racing in front of her a pack of dogs pounces on a half-man-half-doe.
The canvas is decided in soft muted tones. Only the silhouette of Diana in a pink tunic contrasts with a cold sky with clouds that melt over him.
