Dali, turning his back, writes a portrait of Gala by Salvador Dali

The picture is complex and capricious, both compositionally and in terms of setting the light. We see a room with a large window overlooking the sea or the lake. Water smooth surface with a boat on it, the hills on the horizon. In the foreground is a massive wooden chair, in which, with the back to the viewer, the artist sits with a brush in his hand.

Before him is an easel, but we do not see what exactly he is drawing: the easel is deployed “against the light.” The figure of Dali, although it is in the foreground, but because of the quirks of lighting falls out of the focus of the audience’s attention. Thus, the logical center of the composition is shifted to the middle and back planes. Before the artist in a low chair, Gala sits. We also see it from the back. She’s wearing a sailor’s blouse, her hands are kneeling. It illuminates the light falling from the window. On the far wall hangs a mirror in a massive frame of dark wood. What is reflected in it is the focus of the composition.

The mirror surface shows the viewer’s face to the artist and the model. We see that the neck of Gal is decorated with several rows of beads. We see the peaceful expression on her face and the intense attention on Dali’s face. We see the reverse side of the easel with the crosshairs of the rails. The dark wood of furniture, dark silhouettes, light fabric of clothes and bluish transparent light of the sea coast – the charm of these contrasts attracts the attention of spectators, and the focal point of this attention is controlled by the artist’s whimsical fantasy.
