Constable as a master of religious painting is practically unknown. In fact, pictures of religious content – the least successful of what was created by this wonderful landscape painter. Most of these paintings Constable wrote in the early period of his work, trying to earn a living, and, apparently, treated this work without much enthusiasm.

His religious works include three altar images created for the churches in Suffolk and Essex. In addition, he wrote “Christ blessing the children” for the church of St. Michael in Brentham. Another picture, “Christ, sanctifying bread and wine, Constable performed on the order of his aunt.

This work is now in the church of St. James in Neiland. It is curious that the first of these paintings was, apparently, ordered by the painter D. Radom, the rector of the church in Brentham, the grandfather of Maria Biknell, who subsequently forbade Constable to marry her granddaughter.
