Casino de la Jette in Nice often appears in the paintings and drawings of Dufy. After the death of the artist in 1953, in his studio on the easel stood an unfinished picture, on which this casino was also present. The artist wrote this building from memory, as it was destroyed during the Second World War. After the war, a modern building was erected on this site.
The architecture of the casino was eclectic, which many people found tasteless, but Dufy, on the contrary, considered it amusing and witty. He also liked the atmosphere that prevailed inside the casino. This picture was created in 1936, even before the casino building was destroyed.
Most likely, the artist worked on it in the studio, making from nature only the first sketches. During this period, Dufy did not work for a long time in the open air. Determined with the composition of the picture, he wrote it very quickly, but, as a rule, at home, away from other people’s eyes.
