Bathing ladies by Nicola Lancre

Painting by the French artist Nicolas Lancre “Bathing ladies”. The size of the painting is 66 x 55 cm, oil on canvas.

Encouraged by the admission to the Royal Academy of Arts, Lancre began to polish his painting technique with doubled zeal and quickly achieved considerable success, the paintings of the painter began to be in demand in Paris. But soon the two paintings created by Lancre were mistakenly attributed to Watteau, who was in no hurry to deny his authorship. There was a scandal, Lancre was falsely accused of misappropriating someone else’s work.

But the artist proved that he was the injured party. When the truth triumphed, many of Watto’s friends and patrons began to squander the compliments of Lancre’s painting. Watteau, in turn, was also unpleasant for the whole story, but he began to envy the popularity of Nicola Lancre and soon broke off all relations with him forever.
