In its winter landscapes, Avercamp very accurately captures specific signs of the terrain – the walls and towers of the fortress, touched by the past, running windmills, the characteristic curve of the gulf, the masts of frozen ships.

In the tradition created by painter Hendrik Averkamp, winter landscapes and winter folk festivals were continued by his creative heirs, artists Jan van Goyen, Aert van Nir and Jan van de Capelle.
