Hendrik Barentz Averkamp was deaf-mute, known as the “Dumb Master from Kampen”.
The artist specialized in painting winter scenes. His paintings were valued by Dutch citizens, in view of the landscapes and scenes of life of the newly formed Republic of the United Provinces of the Netherlands.
Avercamp was born in Amsterdam, and was studying, probably, in the same place with Peter Izaxc. His manner of painting was formed under the influence of the art of the Flemish painter Peter Brueghel the Elder.
