Warrior in helmet and armor by Leonardo da Vinci

Warrior in helmet and armor by Leonardo da Vinci

Bust of a warrior in fairy-tale armor: a helmet with wings and a lion’s head on a breastplate. The warrior in this figure is a face similar to the Venetian condottiere Bartolomeo Colletone in the sculptural image of Andrea Selo Verrocchio. Leonardo very carefully studied the style of his teacher’s sketches.

Life in the monastery of the Most Holy Annunciation was perfectly suited to Leonardo. Together with his assistants, he could live directly on the job site, creating a new altarpiece for monks. This work kept Leonardo in the city.

Vasari says that the monks serving from the Basilica of the Holy Annunciation “took Leonardo in his house, taking over the costs of maintaining both the artist himself and his assistants.”

Theme of Saint Anne

Vasari writes that the monks of the Church of the Holy Annunciation entrusted the writing of a panel for the altar of Filippino Lippi, but, as soon as Leonardo wanted to receive this order, Filippino kindly succumbed to him. So Florentines with the help of orders kept famous artists who returned to the city.
