Two sisters by Theodore Chasserio

Theodore Chasserio is one of those artists whose talent was early noted and received an opportunity for brilliant development. At the age of 11, the future artist entered the workshop of Ingres, who was struck by the giftedness of a young man, and at the age of 17 Teodor had already exhibited six of his works at the Paris Salon.

In the 1840s, Chassiorio traveled, visited Italy and Algeria, Belgium and Holland. He painted portraits, paintings on mythological and exotic themes, he worked as a monumentalist. “Two Sisters” is one of the artist’s best works, in which the Engra school is perceived with its pedantic attitude to the completeness of the form, the purity of the drawing.

However, the color decisions of Chassiorio, in which it is customary to see the influence of Delacroix’s works, bright colors give the picture a decorative effect and an almost physical sense of presence, which critics noted. Other famous works: “The Toilet of Esther”. 1841. Louvre, Paris; “Leaders of the Arabs before the fight.” 1852. The Musee d’Orsay, Paris; “Portrait of Alexis de Tocqueville.” 1850. The National Museum, Versailles.
