Triumph of Amphitrite by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

Triumph of Amphitrite by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo

As the ancient myth says, Amphitrite is the daughter of the sea prophetic elder, Nereus, and the wife of the lord of the seas of Poseidon. Poseidon abducted her when she was playing dances with other Nereid sisters, for she was very captivated by her beauty. But the dexterous Amphitrite escaped from him and disappeared into one of the caves of the gray titan of the Ocean. However, Poseidon still found her and took him to his palace deep underwater and married her. The obstinate Amphitrite did not resist such an onslaught and became his obedient and faithful wife. They had a son Triton, a sea deity.

Poseidon liked to make a noise in the sea, raise waves, cause a storm. He traveled with Amphitrite from the underwater palace in his chariot, drove the horses, and the waves parted before them. They were always accompanied by dolphins, different fish scurried around the chariot, behind which there remained a wide foamy trail. Poseidon furiously waved his trident, the waves were getting higher. When he was bored with raging, he tranquilized the trident, the sea was silent and then beautiful Nereids emerged from the waves, and with them Amphitrite danced and danced. And Poseidon enjoyed watching their dances with pleasure.
