PICTURE-SKETCH OIL on the theme of the famous plot. The deepest sorrow of those gathered is all the more so that none of them know that the crucified Christ will rise and the tomb will be empty.
The rapid, free manner of writing, the contrasts of light and shadow, the diversity of the postures of the mourners are characteristic of Rembrandt, who created magnificent drawings and engravings with which this picture has much in common. Its practical purpose is still unclear, since in the XVII century it was impossible to find a buyer for such unfinished work.
It may have served as a preparatory sketch for a picture from the Passion of the Lord series commissioned by Frederick Hendrick, although the completed version differs in many ways from it.
