In a common Christian story – the martyrdom of St.. Sebastian Ribera chooses a rarely depicted moment – the salvation of the martyr of St.. Irina, who picked up his body and washed the wounds inflicted by the arrows of the Roman archers. The picture was painted by a young Ribera in Naples, where he lived until the end of his life.
The theme of great tragic content is already evident in this early work of the artist, who was influenced by Caravaggio. With all the spectacular plasticity of the composition in the picture there is no ostentatious, emphasized suffering, everything is natural and simple in it.
The impressiveness of the composition is achieved by a sharp contrast between the illuminated body of Sebastian and the face of St. Irina and the gloomy darkness of the background. The expressive plasticity of the body and the heavy, as if carved from marble fabric, is enhanced by the restraint of the harsh color and the absence of minor details.
