It is believed that this work was commissioned to the artist by the Florentine church of Santa Maria deli Angeli. Opposing of the souls of the righteous and sinners was decided by the artist in an unusual, almost surrealistic manner – the rectangle in the distance in the central part of the picture is a cemetery with open graves, from which the dead rose, called to the Last Judgment. He who sits on this court sits on a throne, surrounded by angels, the Virgin and John the Baptist. On the right hand of Christ are written the souls of the righteous, on the left – the souls of sinners.
It is interesting that in the crowd of sinners Fra Angelico depicts real rulers and priests – this reception was completely new for painting of that time. The artist placed the saints, angels and Christ in peculiar arches. At the very bottom of the central arch, two angels are trumpeting the trumpets, announcing the coming of the day of judgment. It is noteworthy that the land of Fra Angelico is completely naked. A blooming and full of life corner there is only a garden of Eden.
