Obtained from the legacy of Count Janos Palffy, from his Pozhony Palace, in 1912. Until 1892, was in the London meeting of Lord Dudley-Ward, until 1896 – at the Paris antiquary Sedelmayer. The head of St. Joseph resembles the works of Kosta. The composition principle is very simple, the blessing gesture of the baby is often repeated in Franco’s paintings dedicated to the Madonna.
In the last century, the Budapest “Holy Family” together with another “Madonna” was owned by Lord Dudley-Ward. In 1854, Vaagen described the paintings, mentioning that on one of them there is an inscription and date – 1495. In the old special literature this description was misunderstood: as these pictures were confused, it was believed that the date stands on the Budapest painting “Holy Family”, resulting in the Budapest painting was attributed to the earlier works of Franci.
In fact, the date was in another picture of Lord Dudley-Ward, which also survived – this is the so-called “Madonna Gambaro.” Currently, it is stored in New Haven in the Gallery of the Yale University. The Budapest picture has a version made in 1517. The main mood of the late works of Franci is determined by peaceful contemplation, the quiet dreaminess of his images. The blue sky with clouds in the work of Franchi conveys the quiet, brooding mood of the Umbrian masters.
