The Exile of the Fallen Angels by Peter Brueghel

The Exile of the Fallen Angels by Peter Brueghel

1562 year. Bruegel uses this biblical story as a pretext for depicting demons and devils, whom his contemporaries considered quite real beings.

Archangel Michael, depicted in the center, along with the heavenly host, expels the angels who rebelled against God. The latter turn into fantastic creatures – the inhabitants of hell. They appear in the form of people and animals with open mouths and ripped belly.
