The boy in the role of Piero by Jean Honore Fragonard

Contemporaries tried in vain to realize what place among the existing styles and directions is the work of Fragonard. Even in our time it is not easy to determine the style of Fragonard and outline the limits of his creative abilities. It is extremely diverse and multifaceted. One of the areas of Fragonard’s work was portraits. In them he sought to capture the creative individuality, emotional excitement, passion of experiences, which must inevitably go into action, lead the heroes beyond the ordinary.

This is the portrait of “The Boy in the Role of Pierrot.” It seems that the painter has caught the soul of this boy, shining in his eyes, who gullingly and attentively look at the world. Gently pink, white and blue – this color scheme emphasizes not only childlike innocence, but also affectionate disposition of adults to adorable children. In Fragonard himself there was a small part of the child: he looked at the world with a fresh gaze and was always ready to play, and yet this is a sign of imagination, the ability to perceive life with great interest and with great interest.

This children’s portrait is one of many works by Fragonard, which does not date. At best, we can say that the artist was at the peak of his skill. The brush worked exactly at the master’s will, there is not a single superfluous or incorrect smear. The portrait attracts with its beauty, but all attention is drawn not to the technique of painting, but to the unique individuality of the boy – the little hero of the picture.
